EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the late 1890s, depicts two Rajput chiefs in their grand Durbar dress, proudly seated in Delhi. The Rajputs were a prominent warrior community in India, known for their valour and noble lineage. The Durbar dress, worn on formal occasions, was a symbol of their regal status and rich heritage. The first chief on the left wears a white turban, adorned with intricate gold and gemstone embellishments. His jacket, or Angrakha, is decorated with delicate embroidery and mirror work, while his waistcoat, or Kamarbandh, is embellished with intricate designs and pearls. He wears a white skirt, or Pagri, which is draped around his waist and falls to his ankles. His beard is neatly trimmed and his eyes are focused, exuding an air of authority and dignity. The second chief on the right is also dressed in a similar manner, but his turban is black and his jacket is adorned with gold and silver thread work. His beard is fuller and his gaze is steady, reflecting the strength and resilience of the Rajput warrior spirit. This photograph, part of the Boswell collection, offers a glimpse into the rich and vibrant history of India during the late 19th century. The Rajput chiefs, with their grandeur and regal attire, represent the proud and noble traditions of a community that played a significant role in shaping India's history. This photograph, a precious relic of the past, continues to captivate and inspire us with its timeless beauty and historical significance.
