EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Longnose Butterflyfish, Forcipiger longirostris, and its close relative, the Vagabond Butterflyfish, Chaetodon vagabundus. The illustration is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The artwork was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The Longnose Butterflyfish, also known as the Hippolyte Longnose Butterflyfish, is a vibrant and distinctive species of marine fish. With its elongated snout and colorful body adorned with intricate patterns, it is a popular subject among marine life enthusiasts and natural history collectors. The fish is native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and is often found in shallow waters among coral reefs. The Vagabond Butterflyfish, also called the Wanderer Butterflyfish, is another beautiful and intriguing species of butterflyfish. It is easily recognizable by its black and white stripes, which provide excellent camouflage among the coral. Like its Longnose counterpart, it is native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans and is commonly found in shallow waters. This exquisite engraving, created by J.G. Pretre and expertly executed by Massard under the direction of Turpin, is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the marine world. The intricate stipple technique used to create the handcolored image adds depth and texture, bringing the Longnose and Vagabond Butterflyfish to life in a way that words alone cannot. This artwork is a valuable addition to any natural history collection and a reminder of the rich natural heritage that we are privileged to preserve and protect.
