EDITORS COMMENTS
Loudun Possession: The Dramatic Exorcism of the Nuns of Saint-Ursule (1632) This evocative image captures the intense moment of an exorcism performed on the possessed nuns of the Saint-Ursule convent in Loudun, France, during the 17th century. The event, which took place in 1632, was one of the most infamous cases of mass possession in European history. The scene portrayed in this print is believed to depict the climax of the possession, as the nuns are being exorcised in an attempt to rid them of the demons that were said to have taken hold of them. The nuns, dressed in their religious habits, are shown in various states of distress, with some appearing to be convulsed and contorted in agony, while others are calm and serene. The exorcism was led by Father Mignon, a local priest who became convinced that the nuns were possessed by demons after hearing confessions from several of them. The case quickly gained notoriety and attracted the attention of high-ranking clergy and even the King of France, Louis XIII. Despite the skepticism of some, the possession of the nuns of Saint-Ursule was taken very seriously at the time, and the exorcisms were carried out with great ceremony and solemnity. This print, which likely dates from the late 17th or early 18th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into the beliefs and practices of the time, as well as the profound fear and fascination that mass possession and exorcism held for European society. The altered nature of this print, with its dramatic composition and heightened sense of emotion, serves to underscore the paranormal and otherworldly aspects of the event, making it a captivating and intriguing work of historical art.
