The German High Seas Fleet, in an attempt to distract the British navy from the Battle of Jutland, launched a surprise attack on the town, resulting in significant damage to buildings along the seafront and nearby areas. The photograph shows the aftermath of the raid, with houses reduced to rubble and debris. The tragic loss of life during this attack was relatively small, with only two men, a woman, and a child losing their lives.
