EDITORS COMMENTS
Magog, the mythical giant guardian of the City of London, stands proudly in the Guildhall, a historic building that has served as the center of municipal government since the 15th century. The statue of Magog, along with his fellow giant Gog, has been a traditional symbol of the City's protection since the 17th century. According to local folklore, Magog and Gog were the giants who were driven out of London by Saint George during the late Roman period. The origins of the Magog and Gog statues are unclear, but they are believed to have been created in the late 17th or early 18th century. The current statue of Magog, which dates back to the 1980s, is a replacement of the original. The statue depicts Magog as a powerful and imposing figure, with broad shoulders, muscular arms, and a fierce expression. He wears a helmet on his head and holds a shield in one hand and a mace in the other. The statue of Magog is a reminder of the rich history and folklore of the City of London. It is a popular tourist attraction and a source of pride for the people of the city. The statue is also a symbol of the City's resilience and strength, representing the ability to withstand any challenges that may come its way. The Guildhall, where the statue is located, is a historic building that has witnessed many significant events in the City's history. It has been the site of important meetings, ceremonies, and celebrations. The statue of Magog stands as a guardian of the Guildhall and the City of London, watching over its people and its history.
