EDITORS COMMENTS
Phygelius capensis, commonly known as Cape figwort or Cape fuchsia, is a stunning and vibrant flowering plant native to South Africa. This beautiful handcoloured lithograph depicts the plant in all its glory, with its tubular, two-lipped flowers hanging in clusters from slender stems. The flowers come in various shades of red, pink, and purple, and are shaped like tiny lanterns, opening from the bottom upwards, revealing their nectar-filled interiors. The Cape figwort is a popular ornamental plant in gardens around the world due to its attractive appearance and easy cultivation. It thrives in well-drained soil and full sun, making it an ideal addition to any garden. The plant's name, Phygelius, is derived from the Greek word "phyge," meaning "healing," due to its traditional use in traditional African medicine for treating various ailments. This exquisite botanical illustration is from the renowned horticultural publication, "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe," published by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaire in Ghent, Belgium, in 1856. The publication was a comprehensive record of the most beautiful and rare plants of Europe and the Mediterranean, and this illustration of Phygelius capensis is a testament to the skill and artistry of the time. The intricate details of the plant's veins, petals, and stamens are beautifully rendered, making this a valuable addition to any botanical collection.
