EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, created in 1881, showcases two fascinating marine species: the Common Stargazer (Kathetostoma laeve) and the Longsnout Boarfish (Pentaceropsis recurvirostris), accompanied by a selection of Tasmanian flora and fauna. The illustration is taken from the book "Tasmanian Friends and Foes, Feathered, Furred and Finned" by the renowned Australian artist and naturalist, Louisa Anne Meredith. The Common Stargazer, also known as the Copperleaf Stargazer, is a unique fish with an unusual flattened body and an upturned mouth, which it uses to burrow into the sandy ocean floor. Its vibrant, iridescent skin resembles a copper leaf, earning it its common name. The Longsnout Boarfish, or Longsnouted Pigfish, is another intriguing marine creature. With its long, protruding snout and elongated dorsal fin, it resembles a miniature prehistoric fish. This boarfish is also known for its ability to change color to blend in with its surroundings. The botanical elements in the illustration include the Snowberry (Gaultheria hispida), Purple Apple (Crataegus monogyna), and the Swallowtail Butterfly (Papilio palinurus), adding a delightful touch of diversity to the composition. Louisa Anne Meredith, the artist and author of this work, was a pioneering figure in Australian ichthyology, botany, and entomology. Her meticulous observations and illustrations continue to inspire and educate us about the natural world. This stunning chromolithograph is a testament to her dedication and passion for the natural sciences.
