EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the field of entomology published between 1824 and 1839. Plate 61 features the Muff-bodied Bee, Anthidium manicatum, and its favored host plant, Corn Cockle, Agrostemma githago. The intricately detailed illustration showcases the bee's distinctive features, including its large, fuzzy body and long antennae. The Corn Cockle, with its vibrant red and purple flowers, provides a striking contrast to the bee's muted tones. The Muff-bodied Bee, a member of the family Sweat Bees (Halictidae), is native to Europe and Asia. These bees are important pollinators, particularly in open habitats where they visit a wide range of flowers. The Corn Cockle, a common weed in Europe, is known for its edible seeds, which have been used as a food source since ancient times. John Curtis, FLS, the esteemed botanist and entomologist, oversaw the production of this impressive work. Curtis's British Entomology was one of the most comprehensive and accurate records of British insects at the time, featuring over 4,000 plates and covering a wide range of insect orders, including Hymenoptera (bees, ants, and wasps) and Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths). This image offers a glimpse into the natural history of the 1820s and 1830s, providing valuable insights into the biology and ecology of these fascinating organisms. The meticulous attention to detail and high-quality production make this plate an invaluable resource for both historical and scientific purposes.
