The Death's Head Hawkmoth, also known as the Skull Moth, is easily recognizable due to the distinctive pattern on its thorax that resembles a human skull. This macabre design is thought to serve as a warning to potential predators, as the moth's defence mechanism involves releasing a foul-smelling substance.
