This stunning hand-colored engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Edouard Travies for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases two of the world's most vulnerable avian species: the Great Curassow (Crax rubra) and the Western Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus). The Great Curassow, also known as the Red-legged Curassow, is a large, ground-dwelling bird native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. With vibrant red legs, a glossy black plumage, and distinctive red wattles, this bird is a striking sight. Sadly, its population has declined significantly due to habitat loss, hunting, and fragmentation, making it a vulnerable species.
