EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Edouard Travies for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases two of the world's most vulnerable avian species: the Great Curassow (Crax rubra) and the Western Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus). The Great Curassow, also known as the Red-legged Curassow, is a large, ground-dwelling bird native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. With vibrant red legs, a glossy black plumage, and distinctive red wattles, this bird is a striking sight. Sadly, its population has declined significantly due to habitat loss, hunting, and fragmentation, making it a vulnerable species. The Western Tragopan, also known as the Himalayan Tragopan, is a medium-sized, pheasant-like bird found in the western Himalayas. It is easily identified by its distinctive black and white plumage, bright red wattles, and distinctive horns on the males. The Western Tragopan is an elusive bird that inhabits dense, moist forests, and its population is also under threat due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Both of these birds are depicted in exquisite detail in this engraving, with their feathers, wattles, and other features accurately portrayed. The illustration serves as a reminder of the beauty and fragility of the natural world and the importance of conservation efforts to protect vulnerable species like the Great Curassow and the Western Tragopan.
