EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite illuminated calendar print for December 1846, taken from Henry Noel Humphreys' "The Illuminated Calendar and Home Diary," showcases a richly detailed and vibrant scene from a medieval manuscript, specifically from the Book of Hours of the Duke the Anjou, dating back to 1380. The calendar page is adorned with intricate designs, calligraphy, and illuminations, all executed in chromolithograph with gilt accents. At the top of the page, the month of December is announced in bold, decorative letters. Below, a quote from the Epistle to the Hebrews reads, "In the time of his favour I will sing of thy righteousness." A scene unfolds in the central panel, featuring figures of Daniel and St. Matthew, both deep in contemplation. Daniel is depicted in a meditative pose, with his hand raised in blessing, while St. Matthew sits at his desk, quill in hand, writing in a manuscript. Surrounding the central panel, various figures and symbols are depicted. A man in armor slays a boar with an axe, symbolizing strength and courage. A goat, a dog, and birds are also present, representing the zodiac signs for Sagittarius, Capricorn, and Scorpio, respectively. Foliage and castles add to the richness of the design, while an angel with a lance and shield hovers above, protecting the scene. Mythical creatures, such as griffins and dragons, can be found in the intricate borders, adding to the fantastical nature of the calendar. This stunning print offers a glimpse into the beauty and intricacy of medieval illumination, making it a captivating addition to any home or office.
