This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, drawn and etched by Jacob Ludwig Admiral in the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects) published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774, showcases the fascinating transformation of the Poplar Hawk-moth, Laothoe populi. The image captures both the adult moth and its larva, also known as the caterpillar and pupa, respectively. The Poplar Hawk-moth is a large and striking insect, with the adult moth boasting a wingspan of up to 10 centimeters.
