This charming handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Thomas Rowlandson after an illustration by Henry Bunbury, captures the essence of Regency-era equestrianism as depicted in Geoffrey Gambado's "An Academy for Grown Horsemen and Annals of Horsemanship," published in London in 1809. In the image, a dapper gentleman rides his mare with two ladies seated in pannier basket seats mounted pillion beside him. The women, dressed in the fashionable attire of the time, ride sidesaddle, with one holding a parasol for shade. The gentleman, wearing a wig and a tall hat to protect him from the sun, holds the reins in one hand and brandishes a whip in the other, demonstrating his expertise as a horseman. The trio makes their way along a dusty road, passing a milestone, as the countryside stretches out before them. The man's horse, with its arched neck and proud stance, seems to relish the ride, its ears pricked forward.
