EDITORS COMMENTS
This extraordinary photograph is a poignant reminder of the final moments before the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic. Taken on April 14, 1912, by Dr. McLean from the tender Ireland as it approached the stricken ocean liner, this image is the last known photograph of Captain Edward Smith, the ship's commanding officer. The iconic photograph, which measures 4.75 x 6.5 inches, was taken as the Ireland brought mail and a small number of passengers to the Titanic before it sank in the North Atlantic. Dr. McLean sold this original print to the Exclusive News Agency in 1912, making it a rare first-generation press photograph. The reverse of the print bears several stamps, the most significant being "DO NOT DAMAGE. VALUABLE ORIGINAL KEEP CLEAN." This photograph is a testament to the historic significance of the Titanic and the fateful journey that ended in tragedy. The Titanic, a White Star Line vessel, was the largest and most luxurious ocean liner of its time, and its sinking on April 15, 1912, after colliding with an iceberg, resulted in the loss of over 1,500 lives. The image of Captain Smith, standing resolutely on the deck of the Titanic, has become an enduring symbol of the Titanic's final hours and the human spirit in the face of adversity. This photograph, taken during the 1910s, is a valuable historical artifact and a testament to the transport industry's early days. It is an essential addition to any collection of maritime history or Titanic memorabilia.
