This stunning watercolor artwork by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans depicts both a young and adult New Zealand Merganser (Mergus australis) from Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand." The New Zealand Merganser, also known as the Sawbill or Buller's Merganser, is a unique and endemic waterfowl species native to New Zealand. The adult Merganser in this illustration is easily identified by its distinctive black and white plumage, with a glossy green head and a long, serrated bill. The young Merganser, on the other hand, displays a speckled brown body and a shorter, duller bill. Both species have webbed feet and are excellent swimmers, often found in freshwater lakes and rivers.
