EDITORS COMMENTS
: A Captivating Glance into the Past of Nursery Rhymes This evocative photograph, titled "Old Woman Whither So High?", transports us back in time to the late 19th century, where the enchanting world of nursery rhymes comes alive. The image, part of the Boswell collection, slide number 117 from Mary Evans Prints Online, presents a young girl, dressed in a traditional witch costume, confidently riding a broomstick, accompanied by a black cat. The scene is reminiscent of the popular nursery rhyme, "Ring a Ring o' Roses," which includes the line, "A pretty little bundle of sticks, An Old Woman came to visit theicks, And in a dish she put them three, And with a straw she swept the chimney clean." The image seems to depict this old woman, her transformation into a witch a common motif in folklore and nursery rhymes. The young girl's determined expression and the black cat's curious gaze add to the magical atmosphere, while the use of a broomstick as a mode of transportation further emphasizes the connection to the witch archetype. This photograph offers a captivating glimpse into the rich history of nursery rhymes and their enduring influence on children's literature and folklore. The late 19th century was a time when nursery rhymes were being collected, studied, and published in various formats, including picture books, making this photograph an invaluable historical artifact. It serves as a reminder of the power of storytelling and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage for future generations. In this photograph, we are invited to embark on a journey into the mystical realm of nursery rhymes, where the lines between reality and fantasy blur, and the magic of childhood remains ever present.
