EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor painting depicts a spectacled cormorant, Phalacrocorax perspicillatus, masterfully rendered by the renowned nineteenth-century Dutch natural history illustrator, John Gerrard Keulemans. The cormorant, with its distinctive blue-black plumage, is perched on a rocky outcrop, its sharp, hooked beak open slightly as if in contemplation. Keulemans' meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate anatomy of the bird, from the delicate membranes of its wings, to the textured patterns on its feathers, and the distinct ridges of its horn-like casque above its beak. The spectacled cormorant's piercing yellow eyes are bright and expressive, while the green collar around its neck adds a pop of color to the otherwise monochromatic palette. The painting also showcases the bird's distinctive ear-coverts, or spectacles, from which it derives its common name. This illustration was created during Keulemans' tenure as the chief illustrator for the British Ornithologists' Union, under the direction of Alfred Edmund Brehm and Edward Newman, between the years 1888 and 1907. The painting is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the time, and a beautiful addition to any collection of ornithological art. This work was created around the turn of the twentieth century, during the height of the Age of Discovery and the Golden Age of Natural History, when the study of animals and their anatomy was a source of great fascination and exploration.
