EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures H.B. Irving, the talented son of renowned actor Sir Henry Irving, in his regal role as King Charles I in the acclaimed play by W.G. Wills. The image was taken during the tour of the production, which first premiered on September 28, 1872, and was revived in 1907. H.B., commonly known as Harry Brodribb, was only 37 years old at the time and had already established himself as a promising actor in his father's footsteps. In this striking image, H.B. stands confidently in his elaborate costume, donning a cloak and cape, while holding a regal cane. The play, which also featured Irving family favorites such as "The Lyons Mail" and "The Bells," reached The Grand Theatre in Southampton on October 14, 1907. The photograph offers a glimpse into the theatrical world of the Irving family, with Sir Henry Irving's influence extending to his son's successful career on the stage. The photograph, dated 1907, is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Irving family in British theatre and H.B.'s exceptional talent as an actor. W.G. Wills' "Charles I" remains an iconic work in the history of English theatre, and this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of H.B.'s contribution to the legacy of this classic play.
