EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a Service kukri from 1914, featuring a blade with a single fuller. The blade was meticulously manufactured at Fort William Depot in that very year, as indicated by the inscription "F.W/ 1914/ 7 G R" stamped on its surface. The kukri, a traditional Nepalese curved knife, was an essential tool for the Gurkha soldiers serving in the British Indian Army during World War One (1914-1918). The blade's fuller, a hollowed-out area along the edge, was designed to reduce the weight of the blade and improve its cutting ability. The kukri came complete with a service scabbard and frog, which were used to securely attach the knife to the soldier's waist. The scabbard protected the blade when not in use, while the frog served as a belt attachment. This kukri is a testament to the longstanding military alliance between the British and the Gurkha people, who have served with distinction in various British military conflicts since the 1800s. The Gurkha soldiers' expertise in wielding the kukri made them formidable opponents on the battlefield and earned them a reputation as some of the most skilled and loyal soldiers in the British Army.
