EDITORS COMMENTS
This archaic relief, dating back to 530 BC, is a breathtaking testament to the rich mythological heritage of ancient Greece. Housed in the Archaeological Museum of Delphi, this masterpiece is known as the Siphnian Treasury, a monumental structure dedicated to the god Apollo. The intricately carved bas-relief depicts a scene from the epic Trojan War, as described in Homer's Iliad. Two heroic figures, Ajax and Achilles, are engaged in a fierce battle against Memnon and Aeneas. Memnon, a legendary Ethiopian prince, was a formidable opponent, known for his invulnerability, which was believed to be granted by his mother, the goddess Eos. In this scene, Ajax and Achilles, two of the greatest Greek heroes, are determined to prove their strength and valor. The relief is adorned with exquisite details, showcasing the skill and artistry of the ancient Greek sculptors. Ajax, armed with a large shield, is shown delivering a powerful blow to Memnon, who is depicted on horseback, with his horse rearing up in response to the attack. Achilles, on the other hand, is shown fighting Memnon's companion, Aeneas, who is depicted lying on the ground, trying to defend himself with a large shield. The relief is a prime example of the Ionic order of ancient Greek architecture, with its elegant and slender columns and friezes adorned with intricate designs. The Siphnian Treasury is a reminder of the artistic and cultural achievements of ancient Greece, and a source of inspiration for generations to come.
