EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Squirrelfish, Holocentrus adscensionis, and Ruffe, Gymnocephalus cernuus," is an exquisite example of natural history illustration from the early 19th century. The illustration is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was expertly executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. The engraving features two species of fish: the Squirrelfish, Holocentrus adscensionis, and the Ruffe, Gymnocephalus cernuus. The Squirrelfish, also known as the Hippolyte or Cloquet's Squirrelfish, is a small to medium-sized fish found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It is named for its distinctive squirrel-like pectoral fins and its ability to camouflage itself among rocks and coral. The Ruffe, also known as the Gremille, is a small freshwater fish native to Europe. It is characterized by its elongated, slender body and its distinctive, upward-pointing mouth. The Ruffe is an important food source for many fish-eating birds and mammals, and it is also a popular game fish. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this handcolored copperplate stipple engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of the natural history illustrators of the past. It is a beautiful and fascinating glimpse into the natural world of over 200 years ago.
