EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Fossils" and hailing from Dr. Fr. Rolles' Geology and Paleontology section in Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert's Natural History publication, showcases an intriguing assemblage of ancient life forms. The image, published by Schreiber in Munich in 1886, offers a glimpse into the diverse and complex ecosystems that thrived millions of years ago. At the heart of this composition lies a trilobite, specifically identified as Paradoxides bohemicus. Trilobites were among the most successful marine organisms of the Paleozoic Era, with over 17,000 known species. This particular specimen, with its distinctive three-lobed body and intricate eye structure, would have lived during the Late Devonian period. Surrounding the trilobite are various other fossils. To the left, an Acidaspida dufrenoyi, a type of armored fish, can be seen. Above it, the fossilized remains of a Trinucleorus ornatus worm burrow. In the upper right corner, there is an Oldhamia radiata, a type of brachiopod, and a Cyathophyllum hexagonum, a type of calcareous alga or zoophyte. The lower left corner of the image reveals the fossilized remains of a sponge, identified as Astraeospongium meniscus. Sponge fossils are among the oldest known multicellular organisms, with records dating back to the Cambrian period. Nearby, Graptolithus species and Atocris milleri graptolites can be observed, along with a Spirifer and a Gomphoceras ammonite. This stunning chromolithograph not only serves as a testament to the richness and diversity of the fossil record but also offers a captivating glimpse into the ancient world that once was.
