EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of impact as Australian cricket legend, William Maldon Woodfull (1897-1965), is struck by a cricket ball bowled by Harold Larwood during the historic and controversial 1932-1933 Ashes tour at Melbourne Cricket Ground. The image, taken in December 1933, documents a pivotal moment in the contentious series between England and Australia. During this tour, the MCC captain, Douglas Jardine, employed a tactic known as leg-theory or bodyline, which involved bowling the ball directly at the batsman's body, just above the waistline. This tactic caused injuries to several Australian batsmen, including Woodfull, who was struck on the helmet during this match. The use of leg-theory soured relations between the two cricket powerhouses, leading to widespread controversy and heated debates. Woodfull, who had captained Victoria and represented Australia in 41 Tests, was a respected figure in Australian cricket, and his injury added fuel to the fire. Harold Larwood, the bowler responsible for the blow, was a key figure in the English attack during this series. The incident became a defining moment in the history of cricket, with long-lasting implications for the sport and the relationship between England and Australia. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the intense rivalry and passion that has long characterized cricket matches between these two nations. Woodfull's determined expression and unyielding stance in the face of the oncoming ball serve as a testament to the indomitable spirit of cricket players and the enduring allure of the game.
