It looked like a scene from Dickens as these youngsters made their way to school in

It looked like a scene from Dickens as these youngsters made their way to school in Coventry. But although they were dressed in the style of 1875, they knew they weren t going to a school anything like that awful Dotheboys Hall in " Nicholas Nickleby". They were taking part in an open week at Stoke Infants School, Briton Road, which is celebrating its forthcoming centenary. Parents made the costumes for the youngsters, who tried to recreate some of the atmosphere of the school when it opened in January 1876. Schooldays were far from the best of anyones life then, so these children could affford to smile because they did not have to undergo the same experiences. They will not be using the Victorian school building after this week either. For next term the school will move to the premises of a former secondary school nearby.

EDITORS COMMENTS
It looked like a scene from Dickens as these youngsters made their way to school in Coventry. But although they were dressed in the style of 1875, they knew they weren't going to a school anything like that awful Dotheboys Hall in "Nicholas Nickleby". They were taking part in an open week at Stoke Infants School, Briton Road, which is celebrating its forthcoming centenary. Parents made the costumes for the youngsters, who tried to recreate some of the atmosphere of the school when it opened in January 1876. Schooldays were far from the best of anyone's life then, so these children could afford to smile because they did not have to undergo the same experiences. They will not be using the Victorian school building after this week either. For next term, the school will move to the premises of a former secondary school nearby. This print captures a nostalgic moment where children embrace history and pay tribute to their educational roots. Dressed impeccably in period attire, these pupils transport us back to a time long gone but still remembered fondly by many. As Stoke Infants School prepares for its centenary celebration, students participate eagerly by immersing themselves into Victorian-era schooling customs. The dedication shown by parents who meticulously crafted each costume adds an authentic touch and enhances this unique experience. While these young scholars may appear straight out of Charles Dickens' novels, their smiles reveal that their modern-day education spares them from enduring hardships faced by previous generations. This joyful contrast reminds us how fortunate we are today and highlights progress achieved over time. Although soon bidding farewell to its historic building as it relocates next term, Stoke Infants School continues shaping young minds with unwavering commitment towards providing quality education.
