East Coast Joys - No 5, LNER poster, 1931

Poster produced for London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to the East Coast of England. This poster, entitled Sea Fishing, was fifth in a series of six posters illustrating the various pastimes that could be enjoyed on the east coast. The posters formed a continuous scene when placed next to each other, but each was designed so that it could also stand alone. Artwork by Tom Purvis (1888-1957), who rallied for the professionalisation of commercial art. In 1930 he was one of the group of artists who founded the Society of Industrial Artists, which campaigned for improved standards of training for commercial artists in order to broaden their scope of employment

National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "East Coast Joys - No 5" takes us back to the golden era of rail travel in 1931. Produced by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), this poster was part of a series aimed at promoting the picturesque East Coast of England as an idyllic holiday destination. The artwork, created by Tom Purvis, showcases one of the many pastimes that could be enjoyed along the coast: sea fishing. The poster depicts a serene scene with a fisherman standing on a rocky shoreline, casting his line into the sparkling blue waters. The attention to detail and vibrant colors transport viewers to a simpler time when leisurely pursuits were cherished. What makes this particular series unique is that each poster can stand alone as an individual work of art or be placed together to form a continuous scene. This innovative approach highlights Purvis' talent and creativity as he sought to professionalize commercial art during his time. As we gaze upon this remarkable print, we are reminded not only of the beauty and tranquility found along England's east coast but also of the important role railways played in connecting people with these delightful destinations. It serves as both a nostalgic reminder and an invitation for us to explore our own coastal joys today.
