EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of a devastating lorry crash that occurred in Lostwithiel, Cornwall, in September 1990. The image showcases a massive 30-ton lorry overturned on Queen Street, with its load of precious china clay spilled across the road. The impact of this accident was severe, causing significant damage to both the Lostwithiel Garden Machinery shop and Jocks Cafe. Interestingly, this incident marked the fourth serious accident involving a lorry losing control on Lostwithiel Hill. Astonishingly similar to an incident that took place three years prior, it sparked widespread concern among locals about the safety of heavy lorries passing through their town. As we delve into this photograph's details, we can observe bystanders gathering around the scene, their expressions reflecting shock and disbelief at the chaos before them. Their presence serves as a reminder of how such incidents not only affect infrastructure but also disrupt daily life for those residing in close proximity. Photographed by Jonathan Barker for posterity's sake, this image stands as evidence of an event that prompted calls for restrictions on heavy lorries traveling through Lostwithiel. It is a testament to both the power and vulnerability inherent in our transportation systems and serves as a visual reminder of why safety regulations are crucial when navigating Cornish roads.
