EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Tremough House, nestled within the picturesque Tremough Estate in Penryn, Cornwall. Dating back to the early 1900s, this view captures the front exterior of the Grade II listed house, a true testament to its historical significance. Originally built in 1704 by John Worth, Sheriff of Cornwall, Tremough House has witnessed generations come and go. It was once home to esteemed families such as John Tilly, Benjamin Sampson, and William Shilson. Notably, it also served as a residence for the prestigious Tremough Academy for Young Gentlemen during a brief period. Intriguingly enough, from 1943 to 1997 Tremough House took on an entirely different role as it became a convent for the Order of Les Filles de la Croix. This transformation added another layer of history and spirituality to its already rich heritage. Fast forward to more recent times; in 1999 the estate found new purpose when it was acquired by the combined Universities in Cornwall group. Today it stands proudly as part of Penryn Campus which houses both Falmouth University and The University of Exeter. The photographer behind this remarkable image is believed to be Arthur William Jordan - an artist who skillfully captured not only buildings but also moments frozen in time. Through his lens we are transported back into history where we can appreciate both architectural beauty and cultural evolution.
