Framed Print of Aratus planisphere, 1708

Aratus planisphere. This is plate 8 from the 1708 edition of the star atlas Harmonica Macrocosmica by the Dutch-German mathematician and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius (1596-1665). It shows the Earth-centred (geocentric) worldview based on a 9th-century manuscript of Phaenomena by 3rd-century BC Greek philosopher Aratus. Circling the Earth are the Moon, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the zodiac. Mercury and Venus are orbiting the Sun. Harmonica Macrocosmica, first published in 1660, had 30 colour plates with Latin text. This edition was published in Amsterdam by Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
