Framed Print : Galvani Luigi
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Galvani Luigi
Luigi Galvani (1737-1798), Italian anatomist. Galvani noticed that dead frogs twitched when included in a circuit with metals. This led him to propose a new form of electricity (" animal electricity" ). He believed, however, that this was generated by the nerve and muscle tissue in the dead frog. This was later shown to be false by Volta in 1800, who showed that the current was generated by the metals. The galvanometer, used to detect electric current, is named after Galvani, as is the process of galvanisation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Galvani Luigi, an influential Italian anatomist from the 18th century. Known for his groundbreaking discoveries in the field of electrophysiology, Galvani observed a peculiar phenomenon involving dead frogs and metals. He noticed that when these deceased amphibians were included in an electrical circuit with various metals, they would twitch. Galvani's astute observations led him to propose a revolutionary concept - "animal electricity". He believed that this mysterious force was generated by the nerve and muscle tissue within the lifeless frog. However, it was later proven false by Volta in 1800. Alessandro Volta demonstrated that it was actually the metals themselves that produced the current. Despite this misconception being debunked, Galvani's contributions to science cannot be understated. His name lives on through various scientific terms associated with electricity and medical procedures. The galvanometer, a device used to detect electric currents accurately, is named after him. Additionally, the process of galvanization also bears his name. This remarkable colored engraving serves as a tribute to Galvani's significant role in shaping our understanding of biology and physics during his time. It stands as a testament to how one person's curiosity can lead to profound advancements in scientific knowledge and forever leave their mark on history.
