Laser holography of a molecular model C016 / 2054

Laser holography of a molecular model. Holography uses laser beams to record the dimensions of an object as a set of interference patterns. Shining light on the pattern recreates a holographic image of the object. Here, the laser at left is being used to record holographic details of the molecular model at right. Holography was developed in the late 1940s by Dennis Gabor, with the additional use of lasers added in the 1960s. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing world of laser holography. In this image, we witness the cutting-edge technology of recording object dimensions through a set of intricate interference patterns using laser beams. The molecular model C016 / 2054 takes center stage as it is meticulously captured by the laser on the right side of the frame. Holography, pioneered by Dennis Gabor in the late 1940s, reached new heights with the incorporation of lasers in the 1960s. This breakthrough technique revolutionized scientific research and experimentation. The National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK serves as a backdrop for this remarkable display of engineering prowess. The grid-like apparatus surrounding the molecular model adds to its allure, showcasing both historical significance and technological advancement. Mirrors, beams, clamps, and splitters all play their part in creating an environment conducive to producing monochrome holograms. As we delve into this photograph's rich history and British heritage, we are reminded that science knows no boundaries. It transcends time and place while continuously pushing our understanding forward. With each beam of light shining upon these interference patterns, a vivid holographic image emerges before our eyes - a testament to human ingenuity and relentless pursuit of knowledge. This print encapsulates not only a moment frozen in time but also represents countless hours spent unraveling nature's mysteries through physics and experimentation at one of Europe's most prestigious institutions - The National Physical Laboratory (NPL).
