LM cross-section of a healthy human artery

Artery. Light micrograph of a cross-section through a healthy human artery. At top is the lumen (inner cavity) of the artery through which blood flows. The inner endothelial wall (pink) appears folded, consisting of a layer of flattened epithelial cells and elastic connective tissue. Beneath it is a thick tunica media layer (grey) containing elastic fibres and smooth muscle which enables the artery to expand and recoil with the blood flow. The tunica adventitia (at lower frame) contains loosely arranged collagenous fibres as the outer layer of the artery. Arteries transport oxygenated blood from the heart around the body. Magnification: x25 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a cross-section of a healthy human artery, providing us with an intricate glimpse into the fascinating world of our circulatory system. At first glance, we are drawn to the lumen, the inner cavity through which blood gracefully flows, symbolizing life and vitality. The delicate pink hue reveals the inner endothelial wall, appearing folded and composed of flattened epithelial cells and elastic connective tissue. This remarkable structure serves as a protective barrier while facilitating smooth blood flow within the artery. Beneath this layer lies the robust tunica media in shades of grey. Comprised of elastic fibers and smooth muscle, it grants flexibility to the artery allowing it to expand and contract harmoniously with each heartbeat. This dynamic feature ensures efficient circulation throughout our bodies. As we explore further down this visual masterpiece, we encounter the tunica adventitia at its lower frame. Here, loosely arranged collagenous fibers form an outer layer that adds strength and support to this vital vessel. Arteries play a crucial role in transporting oxygenated blood from our hearts to every corner of our bodies. Through this stunning magnification captured at 35mm size by Science Photo Library's expert lensmanship (not for commercial use), we gain profound insight into both their structural complexity and their indispensable function within our miraculous human anatomy.
