M22 Globular Star Cluster, Hubble image C017 / 3722

M14 Globular Star Cluster (NGC 6656). This globular cluster lies around 10, 400 light years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius. Globular clusters are huge balls of stars that orbit the centre of the galaxy. They have also been seen around similar galaxies such as Andromeda (M31). All the stars in a globular cluster are thought to have formed at the same time, and are typically very old. M22 contains hundreds of thousands of stars, and has a diameter of just 97 light years.
