Measuring the expanding universe, artwork C017 / 0678

Measuring the expanding universe. Computer artwork demonstrating two ways that are used to measure the rate at which the universe is expanding. At left the standard candle method is shown. Supernovae have a known brightness. The further you are from a supernova, the fainter it appears (as does a candle). Therefore by measuring how bright a supernova appears, its distance can be determined. At right the standard ruler method is shown. Pairs of galaxies have a preference to be separated by 490 million light years. This separation distance appears to get smaller, the further away the galaxies are (as would a ruler). By measuring this change, the distance can be calculated

Measuring the Expanding Universe - Unveiling Cosmic Secrets

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This artwork, titled C017 / 0678, offers a visual representation of two fundamental methods used to measure the rate at which our vast universe is expanding. Created by NASA/JPL-Caltech in collaboration with Science Photo Library, this computer-generated illustration takes us on an awe-inspiring journey through space and time. On the left side of the print, we witness the application of the "standard candle method". Supernovae, celestial explosions that emit a known brightness, serve as beacons in this cosmic quest. As we move farther away from these stellar events, their luminosity diminishes – much like a candle's glow fades with distance. By precisely measuring their apparent brightness, astronomers can determine their distance and unravel mysteries hidden within our expanding cosmos. Meanwhile, on the right side of this artwork lies another technique called the "standard ruler method". Pairs of galaxies exhibit an intriguing pattern – they tend to separate by approximately 490 million light years. However, as we venture deeper into space and observe more distant galaxies through our metaphorical ruler lens, this separation appears to shrink. By meticulously analyzing this change in separation distance between galaxy pairs over vast distances across space-time fabrications resembling rulers - scientists can calculate immense cosmic distances. Through its vibrant colors and intricate details, Measuring the Expanding Universe invites viewers to contemplate humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our place in this ever-evolving cosmic tapestry. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and scientific ingenuity while reminding us that there is still so much left for us to explore beyond what meets our eyes here on Earth.
