Polymer poem written with an AFM

Tiny poem. Coloured atomic force micrograph (AFM) of a poem written in polymethylmethacrylate polymer by dynamic plowing lithography (DPL). This involves vibrating the probe of an AFM on the surface to be written on. This causes indentations to be made in the surface. The AFM is usually used to image surfaces, up to atomic level resolutions. The probe has a very fine tip that is moved across the surface. The probe is spring mounted, and changes in its position are used to build up a model of the surface. This poem is part of Stages, from Der Glasperlenspeil, by Hermann Hesse. Magnification: x33, 000 at 6x6cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing fusion of science and art. A tiny poem, written with precision using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), is beautifully captured in this coloured atomic force micrograph. The technique employed here, known as dynamic plowing lithography (DPL), involves vibrating the probe of the AFM on the surface to be written on, creating delicate indentations that form the words of the poem. Typically used for imaging surfaces at atomic resolutions, the AFM's fine tip delicately moves across the surface, while changes in its position are meticulously recorded to construct a detailed model. In this instance, however, it serves as a tool for poetic expression rather than scientific observation. The poem itself is an excerpt from "Stages" by Hermann Hesse's renowned work Der Glasperlenspeil. Its German verses come alive through polymethylmethacrylate polymer and DPL techniques. At a magnification of x33,000 and printed at 6x6cm size, this artwork invites viewers into a world where technology meets literature. Through this image, we witness how scientific instruments can transcend their intended purpose and become vehicles for creativity. It reminds us that even within highly technical realms like microscopy or nanotechnology lies room for artistic exploration and innovation. This unique blend of science and poetry offers us a glimpse into new possibilities where boundaries between disciplines blur and imagination flourishes.
