Section through Oak wood

Light micrograph of a transverse section through the wood (secondary xylem) of an oak tree, Quercus robur, showing annual growth rings (horizontal bands) & prominent rays (pale, vertical stripes). Xylem tissue is composed of tracheary vessels which carry water & nutrients from the roots to the leaves. This image shows about six years growth; the porous horizontal bands are layers of large-vesseled spring wood, whereas the bands of dense, compact wood were laid down in the summer, at the end of the growing season. The change from spring to summer wood occurs suddenly in oaks, whereas the transition is often much more gradual in other trees. Magnification: x5 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate world of oak wood. Through a light micrograph, we are presented with a transverse section of the secondary xylem from an oak tree, specifically Quercus robur. The annual growth rings, depicted as horizontal bands, reveal the passage of time and provide valuable insights into the life cycle of this majestic plant. Prominent rays, displayed as pale vertical stripes, add another layer of beauty to this composition. These rays contribute to the structural integrity of the wood and facilitate nutrient transportation within the tree. Xylem tissue comprises tracheary vessels that play a crucial role in conveying water and nutrients from roots to leaves. The image showcases approximately six years' worth of growth in stunning detail. The porous horizontal bands represent layers of large-vesseled spring wood – formed during periods of active growth – while dense, compact summer wood is visible as distinct bands laid down at the end of each growing season. Interestingly, oaks exhibit an abrupt transition from spring to summer wood compared to other trees where it tends to be more gradual. This unique characteristic adds intrigue and sets oaks apart in their growth patterns. With its magnification at 5x on a 35mm scale, this photograph allows us to appreciate nature's craftsmanship up close. It serves as a testament to both the resilience and delicate intricacy found within hardwood plants like oak trees.
