An unusual halo. A halo is formed when light from the Sun is refracted by tiny hexagonal ice crystals high in the atmosphere. The most common halo is 22 arc-degrees in diameter. Here, several halos coincide, with diameters of approximately 18, 38 and 47 arc-degrees. The exact cause of this unusual halo formation is unknown, but similar observations were made in the USA in 1987. This halo was photographed in Finland on 14 May 1988
