Framed Print of Neptune, Roman God

A drawing by Jan Harmensz Muller (1571-1628) of Neptune with his trident and horses. Pen with dark brown ink, brown wash, heightened with white on light brown paper. Neptune was the Roman god of freshwater and the sea in Roman religion. He is the counterpart of the Greek god Poseidon. In the Greco-Roman mythology, he was the brother of Jupiter and Pluto, each of them presiding over the realms of Heaven, our earthly world and the Underworld, respectively. Like Poseidon, Neptune was worshipped by the Romans also as a god of horses, under the name Neptunus Equester, a patron of horse racing. © New York Public Library / Science Source
