Created by Geoffrey Chaucer in the late 14th century, this collection of stories is brought to life through a series of illustrations based on the renowned Ellesmere Manuscript. The image captures the essence of medieval England, with its ancient charm and rich cultural heritage. In this hand-colored engraving, we see the Wife of Bath gesturing animatedly while mounted on her horse. Her vibrant period costume reflects both her status and personality, as she exudes power and confidence. As a woman who defies societal norms, she challenges traditional gender roles and embraces her own unique individuality. Surrounded by an aura of fame and notoriety, the Wife of Bath embodies both spirituality and gossip within Christian society. This illustration beautifully depicts her storytelling prowess as she shares tales during a pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral's shrine dedicated to St Thomas a Becket.
