The New Bricklayers Arms Terminus of the South-Eastern Railway, 1844

The New Bricklayers Arms Terminus of the South-Eastern Railway, 1844.
The Bricklayers Arms station in Southwark, south London, was built as an alternative to the London and Greenwich Railways terminus at London Bridge. Mr. W. Cubitt, the engineer in chief of the line, judiciously selected the site of this station, which is a most advantageous one, being...near the Bricklayers Arms, a travellers resting-place, long established; the engineers skill and the capitalists means have overcome the formidable obstacles presented by marshy surfaces and sluggish streams, and the whole site is now completely- drained and well ballasted. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

The New Bricklayers Arms Terminus of the South-Eastern Railway, 1844

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the bustling streets of 19th century London. The image showcases the magnificent architecture of The New Bricklayers Arms Terminus, a railway station built as an alternative to the crowded London Bridge terminus. Designed by Mr. W. Cubitt, the engineer in chief of the line, this strategically chosen location near the famous Bricklayers Arms pub provided a convenient resting place for weary travelers. Overcoming challenging obstacles such as marshy surfaces and sluggish streams, Cubitt's engineering expertise and ample resources successfully transformed this site into a well-drained and solidly ballasted transportation hub. The scene depicted in this engraving is filled with life - horse-drawn carriages traverse nearby roads while people go about their daily activities. It captures both the grandeur of Victorian architecture and the vibrant energy that characterized 19th-century Britain. Published in "Illustrated London News" in 1844, this historical photograph transports us back to a time when railways were revolutionizing transportation across Britain. Stephen Sly's meticulous attention to detail brings out every intricate feature of this architectural marvel. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from Heritage Images, we are reminded of how far we have come in terms of transportation technology while appreciating our rich heritage rooted in innovation and progress.
