Pine Tree and Fungus, 19th century. Creator: Tsubaki Chinzan (Japanese, 1801-1854)
Pine Tree and Fungus, 19th century. The Nanga, or " Southern School" painters of 17th- and 18th-century Japan were greatly influenced by Chinese culture. The subjects and styles of their work reflected the contemporary Japanese taste for imported Chinese objects and learning. A common practice among Nanga painters was the exchange of small paintings and calligraphies. They also celebrated special gatherings of artist-friends by producing individual sheets that were then gathered together in albums. The sheets shown here were part of such a gathering

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 19th-century print titled "Pine Tree and Fungus" created by the talented Tsubaki Chinzan, we are transported to a world influenced by both Japanese and Chinese culture. The Nanga painters of 17th- and 18th-century Japan were deeply inspired by Chinese art, evident in their choice of subjects and styles. This particular artwork showcases a common practice among Nanga painters - the exchange of small paintings and calligraphies. It was customary for these artists to celebrate special gatherings with their artist-friends by creating individual sheets that would later be compiled into albums. The sheets displayed here were part of such a gathering, offering us a glimpse into the camaraderie and artistic collaboration within this vibrant community. The delicate brushstrokes on ivory silk bring life to the pine tree, standing tall against an ethereal backdrop. Nestled at its base is a cluster of fungi, adding an element of intrigue to the composition. Through ink and light color, Chinzan masterfully captures nature's beauty while infusing it with his own unique style. Now housed in The Cleveland Museum of Art, this exquisite piece from Tsubaki Chinzan reminds us not only of Japan's rich artistic heritage but also serves as a testament to the enduring influence that transcends time and borders.
