EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the intensity and grace of New Zealand-born tennis champion, Captain Anthony Frederick Wilding, during the 1913 Wimbledon Championships. Wilding, who was also a lawyer, motorist, and motorcyclist, is depicted in the prime of his career as he triumphantly defeats M. E. McLoughlin, the American champion, in the challenge round. The image captures the thrill of the match, with the crowd in the background eagerly watching the action unfold on the pristine centre court. Wilding's dominance of the tennis world during this period was unparalleled, as he had previously won the Wimbledon title in 1910, 1911, and 1912. His impressive play on the court earned him the admiration of tennis enthusiasts around the world. However, this photograph also serves as a poignant reminder of the historical significance of this moment in sports history. Just two years after this image was taken, Wilding's life was tragically cut short when he was killed in action near Neuve Chapelle, France, on 9 May 1915, during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. Wilding's sacrifice, like that of countless other athletes who served in the First World War, underscores the enduring spirit of sportsmanship and the profound impact that sport can have on individuals and communities, both on and off the field.
