EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunningly intricate and vibrant print showcases the ruby-throated hummingbird, Archilochus colubris, in all its glory. Plate 47 from John James Audubon's iconic work, "Birds of America," was produced between 1827 and 130 in the original double elephant folio edition. The meticulous detail in this hand-coloured aquatint engraving was achieved through the collaborative efforts of Audubon, R. Havell (& Son) of London, and their skilled team of engravers and colourists. The ruby-throated hummingbird is a small, agile bird belonging to the Apodiformes order and the Trochilidae family, commonly found in North and Central America. This eudicot, angiosperm, and member of the Bignoniaceae family, is characterized by its long, straight, and slender bill, which it uses to extract nectar from flowers. The ruby-throated hummingbird derives its name from the brilliant red coloration on its throat, which is caused by the iridescence of the corundum crystals in its feathers. In this image, the hummingbird is perched on a branch adorned with the delicate flowers of a Bignonia species, showcasing the intricate relationship between these two organisms. The hummingbird's iridescent feathers and the vibrant colors of the flowers are brought to life through the masterful use of hand-colouring techniques, adding an extra layer of depth and realism to the print. As a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the 19th century, this print not only serves as a beautiful work of art but also provides valuable insights into the natural world, showcasing the intricacies of the ruby-throated hummingbird and its relationship with the Bignonia flower.
