EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor painting by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans captures the distinctive features of two endemic New Zealand duck species: the Auckland Island Teal (Anas aucklandica, male) and the Brown Teal or Pateke (Anas chlorotis). The artwork is taken from Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," published in 1888. The Auckland Island Teal, with its elegant plumage of chestnut-brown body, black and white striped head, and distinctive green speculum, is depicted on the left side of the image. This critically endangered species is native to the subantarctic Auckland Islands and is characterized by its small size and round head. On the right side of the painting, the Brown Teal or Pateke is shown with its brownish-gray body, chestnut-brown head, and distinctive white stripe above the eye. This species is the only native waterfowl found in New Zealand's North Island and is considered an important cultural symbol for the Maori people. Keulemans' meticulous attention to detail is evident in the fine brushstrokes and vibrant colors used to bring these birds to life. The painting provides a glimpse into the natural history of these unique and fascinating species, which continue to captivate ornithologists, conservationists, and art enthusiasts alike. The Sauropsida order, to which both the Auckland Island Teal and Brown Teal belong, is a diverse group of animals that includes birds, reptiles, and their extinct ancestors. The Anatidae family, to which these ducks belong, is characterized by webbed feet and a bill adapted for filter-feeding. The Anas genus includes over 70 species of ducks, making it one of the largest genera within the Anatidae family.
