EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting depicts two male specimens of New Zealand Dotterels, also known as Banded Dotterels, in their distinctive plumage. The first bird, Choradrius bicinctus bicinctus, is the Banded Dotterel or New Zealand Dotterel, native to the North Island of New Zealand. The second bird, Choradrius obscurus, is the South Island Dotterel or Tuturiwhatu, native to the South Island and Stewart Island. This artwork was created by the renowned Dutch natural history illustrator, JG Keulemans, for Sir Walter Lawry Buller's seminal work, "A History of the Birds of New Zealand." Published in 1888, this volume is an essential reference for ornithologists and natural history enthusiasts. Keulemans' meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate feather patterns and lifelike expressions of the two birds. The watercolor medium allows for a rich, vibrant color palette, bringing out the subtle variations in the plumage of these fascinating birds. The Banded Dotterel and South Island Dotterel are both members of the Charadriidae family, also known as plovers or dotterels. These birds are characterized by their slender, wading bodies and long, pointed bills. They are adapted to living in a variety of habitats, from sandy beaches to grassy fields. Despite their small size, these birds play an essential role in their ecosystems as both predators and prey. They feed on a diet of invertebrates, including insects, crustaceans, and mollusks, and are in turn hunted by a range of predators, including feral cats and weasels. This beautiful painting is a testament to the natural beauty and diversity of New Zealand's avian fauna and the skill of JG Keulemans as a natural history illustrator. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these delicate ecosystems and the unique species that call them home.
