EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolour illustration showcases the Eastern Cape Blue Cycad (Encephalartos horridus), a native plant of South Africa, in all its splendour. The painting is an original artwork from the esteemed James Yates collection, presented to the Linnean Society in London in 1914. The Eastern Cape Blue Cycad, also known as the Lauderdale Cycad, is a rare and unique plant belonging to the gymnosperm family, Cycadophyta, and the order Cycadales, specifically the family Zamiaceae. This cycad is native to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, where it can be found growing in the wild in rocky, shady areas. The painting captures the intricate details of the plant's cones, which are a distinctive blue-green colour, and its large, glossy leaves. The cones of the Eastern Cape Blue Cycad are unique in that they are covered in small, sharp spines, giving the plant its common name, "horridus," which means "frightful" or "terrible" in Latin. The painting is a testament to the Victorian era's fascination with the natural world and the meticulous attention to detail that characterised botanical illustration during this period. James Yates, the artist, was a renowned botanical illustrator who spent much of his career documenting the flora of South Africa. His work was widely published and admired for its accuracy and beauty. This painting was once part of the Yates collection, which was housed in Highgate, London, before being presented to the Linnean Society. Today, it remains an important historical and botanical record of the Eastern Cape Blue Cycad and a beautiful work of art in its own right.
