Garfield, who served as the 20th President of the United States from March 4, 1881, until his tragic assassination six and a half months later on September 19, 1881. Born on November 19, 1831, in Moreland Hills, Ohio, Garfield was a distinguished military officer and a renowned Congressman before being elected to the highest office in the land. The image, dated October 5, 1881, captures the essence of Garfield's strong character and intelligence. With a stern yet thoughtful expression, he gazes off into the distance, as if contemplating the weighty responsibilities that lay before him.
