EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles" published between 1816 and 1830, showcases two exquisite freshwater fish species native to European waters: the Grayling (Thymallus thymallus) and the European Smelt (Osmerus eperlanus). The illustration, created by the skilled hand of painter Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), was meticulously engraved by Massard under the direction of Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History, masterfully captured the intricate details and vibrant colors of these fish species. The Grayling, with its distinctive grayish-blue back and silver-white belly, is depicted in the foreground, while the European Smelt, with its elongated, slender body and silver scales, can be seen in the background. The engraving process used for this illustration, known as stipple engraving, involved the application of small dots or stipples of ink to create shading and texture. This technique, combined with the expert hand of the engraver, results in a highly detailed and visually stunning representation of these fascinating fish species. This image not only serves as a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the time but also provides a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of European freshwater ecosystems. The Grayling and European Smelt continue to be important species in European fisheries and remain cherished targets for anglers to this day.
