EDITORS COMMENTS
July 1880: The Battle of Maiwand - Saving the Guns: Though Defeated, a Relatively Orderly Retreat to Kandahar The Battle of Maiwand, fought on July 27, 1880, was a significant engagement during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. In this historic photograph from Mary Evans Picture Library, we witness the aftermath of the battle as British soldiers diligently attend to their guns, preparing for the retreat to Kandahar. Despite the defeat of the British force by the Afghans, the soldiers' discipline and determination are evident in this image. The British, led by Lieutenant-General Frederick Roberts, had been caught off guard by the larger and more numerous Afghan army, resulting in a hasty retreat. However, the orderly withdrawal of the British troops, as seen here, allowed them to save their artillery and vital supplies, ensuring their survival and eventual victory in the Battle of Kandahar just a few weeks later. The Battle of Maiwand was a turning point in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, which lasted from 1878 to 1880. The conflict arose due to British attempts to extend their influence in Afghanistan, leading to tensions and ultimately open warfare. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the tenacity and resilience of the British soldiers during this tumultuous period in history. As we observe the soldiers in this image, we are transported back in time, witnessing the raw emotion and intensity of a pivotal moment in the battle. The determination etched on their faces, the focus in their eyes, and the urgency of their actions speak volumes about their unwavering commitment to their cause. This powerful image offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing us with an invaluable insight into the events that shaped the course of history.
