EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 16: Lorius domicella, the Purple-naped Lory, depicted in a stunning 18th-century painting by Pieter Cornelis de Bevere from the Loten Collection of Coloured Drawings of Birds, Mammals, Insects & Plants. This exquisite illustration, created between 1754 and 1757, showcases the vibrant beauty of this parrot species. The Purple-naped Lory, also known as the Blue-naped Lory or the Blue-naped Parrot, is a lorikeet native to New Guinea and the surrounding islands. The bird in this illustration is shown perched gracefully on a branch, its brilliant blue and green plumage a stark contrast against the brown bark of the tree. Its beak, curved and hooked, is poised as if ready for feeding. The purple nape, from which this species derives its name, is a striking feature, adding an elegant touch to its overall appearance. Pieter Cornelis de Bevere, a Flemish artist born in 1710, was a skilled naturalist and artist, known for his meticulous attention to detail and accurate depiction of his subjects. This illustration is a testament to his artistic prowess and his dedication to documenting the natural world. Joan Gideon Loten, a Dutch collector, amassed an impressive collection of natural history specimens and illustrations, including this beautiful painting of the Purple-naped Lory. The Loten Collection, which is now housed in the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands, is a valuable resource for researchers and enthusiasts alike, providing insights into the natural history of the past. The Purple-naped Lory, once a common sight in its native habitat, has experienced a decline due to habitat loss and hunting for the pet trade. Today, it is considered a vulnerable species, and conservation efforts are underway to protect it and ensure its survival.
